Billy Ray Adapts “Last Tycoon” For HBO

Acclaimed scribe Billy Ray (“Captain Phillips,” “The Hunger Games”) is set to write and direct the drama series “The Last Tycoon” for HBO.

Chris Keyser (“Party of Five”) is attached as showrunner on this adaptation of “The Great Gatsby” author F. Scott Fitzgerald’s final unfinished novel.

The story follows Hollywood’s studio executive Monroe Stahr in the 1930s as he climbs to the height of power, pitting him against his mentor and current head of the studio Pat Brady.

Stahr and Brady were based on real life moguls Irving Thalberg and Louis B. Mayer respectively. The series will deal with the violence, sex and towering ambition that engulfed Hollywood during this period.
