After seven seasons, TNT’s acclaimed and award-winning homicide procedural “The Closer” came to an end on Monday night with a whopping 9.1 million viewers tuning in for the series finale.
That makes the episode the third most watched series telecast (live+same day) in basic cable history ahead of the recent “The Walking Dead” second season finale in fourth but behind the “Monk” series finale in first and the 2007 mid-season finale episode of “The Closer” in second.
The show is the only series in cable history to rank #1 for five consecutive years and remains basic cable’s most-viewed scripted series of all time, consistently averaging 7-8 million viewers per episode.
The spin-off series “Major Crimes”, which moves Mary McDonnell’s character into the lead and keeps almost all the supporting characters from “The Closer”, premiered straight after to 7.2 million viewers. That number makes it the most popular new series on cable this year.
