Following his success in the role during the second season of “Marvel’s Daredevil” on Netflix earlier this year, former “The Walking Dead” actor Jon Bernthal is reprising the character of Frank Castle/The Punisher in his own spin-off series which the streaming giant has green lit.
What isn’t clear is when said series will go forward, or if Bernthal will make an appearance in other Marvel Netflix shows before getting to work on it. Yesterday, a tweet by the organisers of New York Comic Con has added fuel to the speculation fire saying that due to his Netflix production schedule Bernthal will only be at the convention for two days of its whole run from October 6th-9th.
With “The Punisher” spin-off not shooting yet and no specific date as to when “The Defenders” beings production beyond a late 2016 start, this has led to plenty of speculation about what filming Bernthal’s actually doing. One possibility is a cameo in “Iron Fist” which is in production at this point.
Another and more interesting idea has been hinted at by Marvel’s Head of Television Jeph Loeb who introduced several people including “The Punisher” creator Gerry Conway at a recent “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” S4 premiere screening. Loeb said at the time (via Collider): “You will understand why I brought all of these people here later in the season, and why it makes sense.”
“The Punisher” spin-off series isn’t expected to hit the streaming giant until sometime in 2018.
