Greg Berlanti, one of the central architects of The CW’s DC Comics shows, is turning his hand to film with the TV showrunner in negotiations to direct a film adaptation of Becky Albertalli’s young adult novel “Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda” at Fox 2000 and Temple Hill.
The coming-of-age coming-out story centers on a high school junior named Simon whose sexual-orientation secret falls into the hands of the class clown.
The latter blackmails the teen into playing cupid and while that unfolds, Simon tries to navigate a way that will let him come out to his friends and family, not pushed out.
Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger penned the script while Pouya Shabazian, Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen will produce. Filming aims to begin early next year.
Berlanti previously directed 2010’s “Life As We Know It” and has dealt with notable coming out and gay character storylines on TV before in shows such as “Dawson’s Creek” and “Brothers and Sisters”.
