Benazir Bhutto, the former Pakistani prime minister who was assassinated last week, is to receive a biographical film treatment through Indian director Mahesh Bhatt.
Bhatt tells Teletext that “The basic motive behind this announcement is just to dedicate this film to Benazir Bhutto. The film is going to be released internationally, and we don’t want to create any controversy with this film.”
Bhutto was the first woman elected to lead a Muslim state and served as PM twice in the late 80’s and mid-90’s. Bhutto went into self-imposed exile in Dubai in 1998 but returned to Pakistan on October 18th last year. She was assassinated on December 27th after departing a rally in Rawalpindi, two weeks before the scheduled Pakistani general election of 2008 where she was a leading opposition candidate.
