British thesp Ben Whishaw (“SPECTRE,” “London Spy”) has joined the cast of the upcoming sequel “Mary Poppins Returns” at Walt Disney Pictures.
Much of the team behind “Into the Woods” are involved in this new take on the P.L. Travers books. Set in Depression-era London, the story follows a now-grown Jane and Michael Banks who, along with Michael’s three children, are visited by the enigmatic Mary Poppins (Emily Blunt) following a personal loss.
Through her unique magical skills, and with the aid of her friend Jack (Lin-Manuel Miranda), she helps the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives. Whishaw is set to play the grown-up Michael Banks. Meryl Streep is also involved as Mary’s cousin Topsy Turvy.
Rob Marshall is helming, David Magee is penning the film’s script while John DeLuca and Marc Platt will produce. The film is targeting a Christmas 2018 release.
