Ben Stiller is in talks to play the titular role in the long-gestating reboot of “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” for 20th Century Fox says Deadline.
The previous draft of the project has been dumped and scribe Steve Conrad (“The Pursuit of Happyness”) has come onboard with a new approach that Stiller sparked to and wants to make his next film.
The studio will now move quickly to lock down a director with the aim to produce a PG-rated action family film that will start shooting in the late Fall.
Based on the 1947 Danny Kaye film which itself was based on a 1939 James Thurber short story, ‘Mitty’ follows a quintessential daydreamer whose vivid imagination allows him to escape from the mundane constraints of his ordinary life.
The likes of Jim Carrey, Mike Myers, Owen Wilson, Will Ferrell and Sacha Baron Cohen have been linked to the lead roll while filmmakers like Steven Spielberg, Ron Howard and Gore Verbinski have also been attached to previous versions.
However the numerous scripts have never been quite right until Conrad’s fresh take which has apparently gotten everyone excited.
