Camilla Belle (“10,000 BC”) will team with “The Tudors” stars Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Peter O’Toole for Aloe Entertainment and Dune Films’ “Mary, Mother of Christ” reports the trades.
Belle will star as the titular Biblical character, Meyers will play the dual roles of Gabriel and Lucifer, and Peter O’Toole will play Symeon who meets Mary and her family in the temple shortly after Jesus’ birth.
Al Pacino and Jessica Lange are in talks to play King Herod and Anna the Prophetess respectively.
Unlike the 2006 flop “The Nativity Story”, this project is being described as a female empowerment movie that explores Mary’s youth, young love, her life as a new mother and the triumph through the absolute terror of Herod the Great’s reign.
Alejandro Agresti (“Valentin,” “The Lake House”) is directing the film which begins filming in Morocco in May.
Mary Aloe is producing, while Benedict Fitzgerald (“The Passion of the Christ”) co-wrote the screenplay with Barbara Nicolosi.
Media 8 Entertainment is planning an April 2nd 2010 release to coincide with Good Friday.
