David Oyelowo, Lily Collins and Dominic West have signed on to star in the BBC’s upcoming six-part adaptation of Victor Hugo’s 19th century classic novel “Les Miserables”.
A direct adaptation of the tome rather than of the famed musical inspired by the work, West will play French criminal Jean Valjean who is convicted of stealing a loaf of bread and sentenced to jail. He spends his life trying to do good works, yet is pursued by Inspector Javert (Oyelowo) for a parole violation.
Collins will star as Fantine, a woman who has sacrificed everything for her young daughter Cosette (Ellie Bamber). Also onboard are Adeel Akhtar and Olivia Colman as Monsieur and Madame Thenardier, Josh O’Connor as Marius, and Erin Kellyman as Eponine.
Andrew Davies (“War & Peace”) is going back to the novel and its themes of class struggle and civil unrest in volatile times. BBC Studios and Lookout Point are producing for BBC and Masterpiece.
