BBC Announces Multiple New Projects

The BBC has announced a bunch of new projects which will be hitting small screens in coming months.

First up, former “Game of Thrones” actor Richard Madden and “Ashes to Ashes” lead Keeley Hawes are set to star in the six-part drama series “Bodyguard” for BBC One.

Penned by Jed Mercurio (“Line Of Duty”) and set in and around the corridors of power in the UK, the story follows a heroic but volatile war veteran assigned to protect the Home Secretary whose politics run contrary to his own.

Next up, the same channel and Ecosse Films are developing the six-part drama “The Trial of Christine Keeler”. Filming begins in the UK in 2018.

Novelist and screenwriter Amanda Coe pens the story which deals with the Profumo affair, the 1960s British sex scandal that rocked the government of British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan. Ian McKellen, John Hurt and Bridget Fonda starred in the 1989 film “Scandal” which adapted the true life tale.

They’re also developing the World War II drama “World on Fire” from Peter Bowker (“The A Word,” “Marvellous”). The multi-stranded drama follows the lives of ordinary people from all sides of this global conflict.

The first series of seven episodes tells the story of the first year of the war, starting with the German invasion of Poland in September 1939 and ending with the Battle of Britain. Filming will commence next year in locations in the UK and across Europe.

Over on BBC Two, the drama series “Trigonometry” will deal with what happens when a cash-strapped couple open their small apartment to a third person – in the process an unusual relationship becomes unavoidable.

Also on the way is “The North Water,” a five-episode adaptation of the critically acclaimed novel from Ian McGuire. “Weekend” and “45 Years” helmer Andrew Haigh will pen and direct the project for See-Saw Films with filming to begin in Summer 2018.

Set in Hull and the ice floes of the Arctic in the late 1850s, the story follows disgraced ex-army surgeon who signs up as ship’s doctor on a whaling expedition to the Arctic – an ill-fated journey with a murderous psychopath of a harpooner and a harsh struggle for survival in the Arctic wasteland.
