Barry Jenkins To Helm Alvin Alley Movie

“Moonlight” and “If Beale Street Could Talk” helmer Barry Jenkins has been set to direct an untitled film based on the life of influential African-American choreographer Alvin Ailey for Fox Searchlight.

Based in part on Jennifer Dunning’s seminal biography “Alvin Ailey: A Life In Dance,” the story chronicles his rural upbringing, professional success and his manic-depressive and often self-destructive qualities with a drug habit and promiscuous erotic love for men that raised eyebrows and occasionally led to skirmishes with police.

Julian Breece is writing the script while Judy Kinberg, Adele Romanski, Rachel Cohen, and Alicia Keys are producing for AK Worldwide Media, iDeal Partners, and PASTEL.

Jenkins most recently scripted the Angel Manuel Soto-directed “Twelve,” a feature adaptation of the documentary “12 O’Clock Boys”.
