In talk that pretty much cements the fact that none of the previous Netflix incarnations of Marvel characters are coming back, British actor Ben Barnes has confirmed he’s been in talks for a completely different role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Barnes played Billy Russo/Jigsaw, the lead antagonist of “The Punisher” TV series on Netflix, and speaking with Digital Spy recent he confirmed he had spoken with Marvel Studios as recently as this year about joining one of their upcoming franchises in a whole new role:
“I did talk to them about something this year, but it was a bit too close to doing ‘The Punisher,’ I think, for them. But, you know, they have proof that you can – particularly if it was on TV – you can go back and do a movie if there’s a character that’s right. I was definitely talking about a couple of superheroes last year.”
That is certainly true. Celebrated actors Mahershala Ali and Alfre Woodard have played separate roles for Marvel. Both served as lead antagonists of the “Luke Cage” TV series, and then Woodard went on to a small but key role in “Captain America: Civil War,” while Ali will soon star as “Blade”.
