Ellen Barkin and Scott Speedman are set to take on the roles that Jacki Weaver and Joel Edgerton made famous in TNT’s drama pilot “Animal Kingdom”.
A U.S. TV series adaptation of the acclaimed 2010 Australian crime thriller feature, the series centers on 17-year-old Joshua ‘J’ Cody’ who moves into the Southern California beach town of his grandmother and his uncles following his mother’s overdose.
Barkin plays Janine ‘Smurf’ Cody, a working-class mom with what appears to be a picket-fence lifestyle. In fact, she is actually the matriarch of an organized crime family with enough authority to make dangerous men tremble.
Speedman plays Cody’s son and Josh’s uncle Barry ‘Baz’ Brown who leads the group in their armed robberies. Jonathan Lisco penned the adaptation with John Wells to direct the pilot and executive produce. Filming begins next month in Los Angeles.
