Cinemax has canceled its acclaimed but little seen crime drama “Banshee” with the show’s upcoming fourth season to serve as its last.
In a statement, co-creator/EP Jonathan Tropper says: “While we certainly considered returning for a fifth season, I always said that when the story was told, it would be time to move on, and that time has come. I am grateful to Cinemax for making Banshee the great success it has been and for supporting our creative decision to wrap things up.”
The show followed Lucas Hood (Antony Starr), an ex-con and master thief who tracks down his former lover and partner in crime Carrie Hopewell (Ivana Milicevic). Hopewell has reinvented herself as the wife of a Pennsylvania town’s prosecutor, so Hood assumes the identity of the town’s new sheriff and continues his criminal activities.
The eight episode fourth season is scheduled to air in January. The cancellation comes as Cinemax moves away from the more action and lurid drama shows that made it famous in favor of more pulpy genre fare like “The Knick,” “Quarry” and “Outcast”.
