Antonio Banderas is set to direct the love story “Akil” which will star his wife Melanie Griffith.
The story follows an African boy who reaches Spain in a small boat. Fleeing from the police, he takes shelter in the house of an American woman.
Banderas says the film is a “love story between two completely different people — in age, attitude, religion, wealth — who end up being essential to each other.”
Banderas has penned the screenplay and will produce through his Green Moon production company with independent financing.
His schedule, however, is booked solid this year with projects including “Automata,” the Chilean miner saga “The 33,” and the role of Pablo Picasso in Carlos Saura’s “33 Days.”
