While a third “Bad Boys” is struggling to make its way to the big screen, a TV series spin-off centering on Gabrielle Union’s character from the second one is now in the works.
In the second film, Union played Special Agent Sydney ‘Syd’ Burnett – a DEA undercover operative and the sister of Detective Lieutenant Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence). She was also romantically involved with Marcus’ partner, Detective Lieutenant Mike Lowrey (Will Smith).
The untitled project is currently being pitched to TV networks and has reportedly already garnered strong interest from multiple outlets – with a major commitment expected to be settled on soon. “The Blacklist” writers-producers Brandon Margolis and Brandon Sonnier are writing the project.
Union has become available as BET announced recently that her popular series “Being Mary Jane” will end next year. Her management at Primary Wave are spearheading the ‘Boys’ spin-off.
Jerry Bruckheimer, Doug Belgrad, Primary Wave Entertainment and Sony PIctures TV Studios are all behind the pitch – Bruckheimer produced the films, Belgrad worked as a Sony exec during their making, and Sony itself distributes the films.
As the series is based on existing Bruckheimer intellectual property, it doesn’t fall under his deal at CBS and so is free to be shopped around.
