The “Shaft” franchise returns with its third incarnation in this weekend’s “Shaft” which sees Richard Roundtree, Samuel L. Jackson, and Jessie T. Usher all taking on members of the ‘Shaft’ family in the action comedy.
Critics reviews last week slammed the film, the movie taking in just 35% on Rotten Tomatoes and getting knocked heavily for its homophobia, sexism, racism, and poor scripting.
Audiences however seem to be liking it – at least those who saw it. The film’s Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score is clocking in at a very high 93% (the previous three films never scored higher than a 68%) while the cinema exit polling service CinemaScore awarded it an A rating.
Despite that apparent audience love, they’re not showing it where it counts as the film is coming in notably under expectation. The studio wanted a $15 million opening – they got just an $8.3 million and sixth place opening. No matter how well it’s liked, this film is going to die quickly.
“Shaft” won’t be opening internationally, the film will be released on Netflix across the rest of the world in two weeks – on Friday June 28th.
