Atwell Joins, Whedon Polishes “Captain America”

Marvel Studios announced in a press release yesterday that Hayley Atwell has been cast to star as Peggy Carter in the studio’s anticipated “Captain America: The First Avenger”

In the early comics, Peggy Carter fell in love with Captain America (Chris Evans) while they fought together in the war effort. The character will be updated for the feature adaptation.

According to previous reports Emily Blunt was the original top choice for the role but declined the offer. Atwell and Alice Eve were then said to be the top contenders in the running with recent screen tests in the UK being a key decider.

Unlike with Evans where the official casting was announced weeks after the decision was made and widely reported on, Marvel’s press office got the news out on Atwell’s official casting with great speed.

Atwell has been seen in the likes of “The Duchess,” “Brideshead Revisited,” “Cassandra’s Dream” and the recent mini-series remake of “The Prisoner”.

Meanwhile Pajiba reports that Joss Whedon, who was hired earlier this week to direct Marvel’s “The Avengers” movie, will apparently perform both re-writes on “The Avengers” script and possibly a polish of the “Captain America” script.
