Arrow Gets New Vertigo, No ‘Dawn’ Cameo

Whilst Marvel is pursuing an interconnected screen universe across film and television, DC isn’t doing the same – opting for a shared cinematic universe but allowing separate adaptations of its comic titles for the small screen (aside from the “Arrow”/”Flash” linkage).

The upside of this approach is that the shows aren’t hampered in the way something like “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” is. The likes of “Gotham,” “Constantine” and “Arrow” can essentially use whatever key characters and villains from the DC Universe they want without worrying about stepping on their big screen cousin’s toes or lacking access to a character earmarked for future movies. Added to that, they can be completely different both tonally and visually to both their cinematic brethren and each other.

The downside though is that you’re not going to get the likes of Henry Cavill or Ben Affleck popping up for a cameo on these shows, or show stars making appearances in the films as the same character. For a while many have wondered if Stephen Amell’s Oliver Queen character from The CW’s “Arrow” might make an appearance in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” or the “Justice League” movie.

Amell himself is reportedly keen on the idea and has used social media to drop hints about his eagerness, though has so far denied any chance of an appearance in the film. Fans continue to clamour for it though, even going so far as to suggest that one of at least four events on the actor’s schedule at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con will be an appearance at the Warners/DC panel.

Amell himself has denied that, saying “Hey Guys – I appreciate all the support and enthusiasm, but not everything I post is a cryptic indicator that I’m going to be in ‘Batman v Superman.’ I’m not going to be in ‘Batman v Superman.'” That doesn’t rule him out of “Justice League” though.

For now he’s focused on the third season of “Arrow” which continues casting up this week with another name joining the bunch – Peter Stormare. The veteran character actor, who is already set to pop up next season in a recurring villain capacity on NBC’s “The Blacklist,” will also appear as a villain in “Arrow”.

In fact he’ll be playing a familiar one – Count Vertigo. Seth Gabel (“Fringe”) played ‘The Count’ in the first two seasons. Stormare’s version goes by the name ‘Vertigo’ (aka. Werner Zytle) and is introduced as the new distributor of the drug following the demise of ‘The Count’. Stormare’s take is based on the DC Comics’ New 52 version of the character.
