A remake of Italian horror filmmaker Dario Argento’s masterpiece gothic giallo masterpiece “Suspiria” has been stuck in development for some years.
At one point David Gordon Green was set to direct with the likes of Isabelle Huppert and Janet McTeer attached to star. More recently Luca Guadagnino has been set to direct with Tilda Swinton and Dakota Johnson attached. Filming was originally set to begin next month but that doesn’t look like it’s happening.
Speaking with Indiewire, Argento himself has surprisingly revealed that he’s been kept completely in the dark about the film despite having plenty of insight to share. Yet he also doesn’t see much of a point to the whole endeavour:
“I’ve been waiting for this project to come about for so many years. The copyrights were bought about seven years ago. First, they belonged to 20th Century Fox, then they were handed over to some other companies, and so on.
But what’s really absurd – really unbelievable – is that I have never, ever been asked about it. I never got a call or anything, asking me about casting, locations, whatever. I know nothing about this project except what I read in the papers. I repeat: I have never, ever been asked about it…
Honestly, I do think it would be better if it wasn’t remade …the film has a specific mood. Either you do it exactly the same way -in which case, it’s not a remake, it’s a copy, which is pointless- or, you change things and make another movie. In that case, why call it ‘Suspiria’?”
At last report, Argento is in pre-production on the serial killer thriller “The Sandman”.
