One of the most surprising announcements in the wake of the success of James Wan’s “Aquaman” was that of a spin-off being put into development, one focused on the intriguingly designed Trench creatures from one of the film’s key sequences.
We already know the spin-off won’t include any of the main cast of “Aquaman,” they themselves will be busy with the direct sequel which was recently slated for a December 16th 2022 release. Now the film’s producer Peter Safran has indicated that the plan is to get the spin-off out and in cinemas before the sequel arrives, telling THR:
“We always, even from the early concept art days, loved the idea of a Trench movie. hen, when audiences embraced it in the movie itself the way they did, particularly that ant farm shot where the camera follows the Trench [creatures] following Arthur and Mera down into the deep, we just knew that we had something very special there and we knew what that movie should be. And consequently, I suspect that that’s one that will come out significantly before Aquaman 2.”
Safran also surprisingly confirmed the film be set after the events of the first “Aquaman,” and not a prequel film as was previously suggested. Even so, it’s likely we won’t see a “Trench” film until 2021.
