“Aquaman” isn’t opening in the United States until this coming Friday, but the film had a special Saturday 7pm screening at roughly 1,225 theaters this weekend as part of an Amazon Prime and Atom Tickets promotion.
Amazon Prime and Atom Tickets did a similar thing with “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” last year with that movie scoring $1.86 million in its single sneak peek session the weekend before release. “Aquaman” has now topped it – taking in $2.9 million from the paid sneak preview.
In fact that one session is enough to put the film in 10th place for the overall three-day weekend box-office this week, ahead of awards faves like “Green Book,” “The Favourite” and “Widows,” and also bodes well for the film’s chances when it opens next week.
“Aquaman” has already managed an overseas box office haul of $261 million so far and still has yet to open in many markets. In the U.S. it is expected to score a $57-62 million haul over the Friday-Sunday weekend and a $115 million haul over the five-day Christmas holiday period (Friday-Tuesday).
