Both “Mary Poppins Returns” and “Aquaman” are heading towards a sizeable opening weekend just before Christmas according to THR.
Short-term early tracking for that weekend has come in with Disney’s fantasy sequel to “Mary Poppins” to score $40 million during its first five days of release (it opens Wednesday December 19th) and $65-70 million in its first week. “Aquaman”, opening on Friday December 21st, is expected to do even better and score $65 million over the three-day and up to $100 million over the five days.
Both films are coming off early screenings with strong word of mouth, ‘Mary’ in particular getting raves. Less glamorous is the outlook for the other openers with “Bumblebee” slated for a decent $40 million five-day haul, while both “Second Act” and “Welcome to Marwen” will generate somewhere in the disappointing mid-teens of millions in their first five days.
Both ‘Poppins’ and “Aquaman” released new clips today including a featurette on the musical and an international trailer for the DC Comics hero title.
