Producer and filmmaker Adi Shankar has revealed that long-running Indian-American convenience store owner character Apu in FOX’s “The Simpsons” could well be quietly written out of the show.
Speaking with Indiewire, Shankar says that ‘multiple sources’ have told him the Apu Nahasapeemapetilon character, voiced by Hank Azaria, is going to be quietly dropped in order to avoid further controversy.
The character has been the subject of complaints about stereotyping, complaints which were crystallised and turned into public debate last year with the help of Hari Kondabolu’s documentary “The Problem with Apu”.
Azaria himself has previously said he’s ‘willing and happy’ to step aside as the voice of Apu or to help transition the character into something new. Fox Television has previously said they would leave it up to the show on how to handle things going forward.
