With the first two “Step Up” films proving solid moneymakers for Disney Pictures, the studio has announced ambitious plans for not one but two follow-ups.
As previously reported, a third one entitled “Step Up 3D” is being planned for release next year in Disney Digital 3D. Today comes word that a fourth film is already in development.
The Mouse House plans to have “Step Up 4 Your Rights” as one of its tentpole releases for Summer 2010 says The Portland Times-Gazette. The plan with this entry is to open the franchise to a wider fanbase – that means a bigger budget and bigger stars.
It’s also pulling out all stops in terms of casting with Zac Efron already in talks to play the male lead. Whilst the female lead hasn’t been set yet, the studio is said to be seriously courting Miley ‘Hannah Montana’ Cyrus for the role.
Both actors are tipped to earn multi-million dollar paychecks for the project, and considering their background it’s expected some musical numbers will be inserted amongst all the dancing.
Story details are being kept under wraps. The first “Step Up” helmer Anne Fletcher will return in the directing chair, and production is scheduled to get underway in Los Angeles early next year.
