Apple has scored the rights to develop “Shantaram,” the upcoming mob drama TV series adaptation of Gregory David Roberts’ best-seller and its sequel “The Mountain Shadow” which is being produced by Paramount Television and Anonymous Content.
The novel follows an Australian heroin addict convicted of robbery who escapes from a maximum-security prison and flees to India where he reinvents himself as a doctor in the slums of Bombay.
He then gets involved in counterfeiting, smuggling and gunrunning, which leads him to Afghanistan, where he and a mob boss battle Russians. Andrea Barron, David Manson and Steve Golin will executive produce while Eric Warren Singer (“American Hustle”) is writing.
The project was previously set up as a feature with Johnny Depp set to produce and Joel Edgerton attached to star.
