Apple has won a competitive bidding war for the rights to Min Jin Lee’s best-selling novel “Pachinko” with plans to develop it as an international drama series. Soo Hugh (“The Terror) will serve as showrunner with Michael Ellenberg’s Media Res producing.
Epic in scope, the story chronicles the hopes and dreams of four generations of a Korean immigrant family and begins with a forbidden romance and crescendos into a sweeping saga that journeys between Korea, Japan and America.
The series said to have a big premium budget allotted for the show’s production, one akin to Netflix’s “The Crown”. Additionally, the drama is expected to be told in three different languages: Korean, Japanese and English.
