“Training Day” and “King Arthur” director Antoine Fuqua has signed on to helm a $30 million Chinese-language biopic on legendary Tang Dynasty imperial concubine Yang Guifei says The Hollywood Reporter.
The currently untitled film will tell the tragic love story between imperial consort Yang, one of the four famed beauties of ancient China, and 8th century Emperor Xuanzong, the longest reigning monarch of the Tang Dynasty. Their love affair has been widely celebrated by classical poets and is the subject of paintings, operas, books and television shows
Xi’an Qujiang Film & TV Investment Group is financing the historical epic which will shoot on location across China later this year for a 2012 release. Casting is now under way and Fuqua will likely helm it once he wraps work on the soon to film “Tupac Shakur” biopic at Morgan Creek.
