Ansel Elgort (“Baby Driver,” “The Fault in Our Stars”) has been cast in the lead role of Tony in Steven Spielberg’s upcoming film adaptation of the Broadway musical “West Side Story” at 20th Century Fox. Shooting begins next Summer.
The story centers on the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two teenage street gangs. Pulitzer Prize winner Tony Kushner has penned the revival of the Laurents, Bernstein and Sondheim 1957 musical which starred Larry Kert in the Tony role in the original Broadway run and Richard Beymer in the 1961 film.
Producers have auditioned thousands of actors and dancers in New York, Los Angeles, Miami and Puerto Rico in recent months for the remake which Spielberg, Kevin McCollum and Kristie Macosko Krieger will produce.
