With “The Greatest Showman” proving a box-office success, Fox 2000 hopes to repeat the formula and has picked up another original musical fantasy event film about a historical figure.
This time the choice is far less controversial – prolific author Hans Christian Andersen. “Mary Poppins Returns” scribe David Magee will pen the script with “Wicked” composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz is behind the musical elements of the film. Additionally, Craig Zadan and Neil Meron (“Chicago”) will produce.
“Baby Driver” star Ansel Elgort has reportedly emerged as the top contender to play the lead role of a young Andersen who gets trapped by his own imagination in the worlds of his own making in the story.
Andersen’s public domain works include the likes of “The Little Mermaid,” “The Snow Queen” and “The Ugly Duckling”.
