Legendary Argentinian soccer player Diego Maradona is set to be the subject of British filmmaker Asif Kapadia’s next documentary “Maradona” for Lorton Entertainment.
Following in the wake of Kapadia’s acclaimed docos about Aryten Senna and Amy Winehouse, the latter the favorite to take the documentary Oscar next month, Kapadia will helm the project along with his “Amy” collaborators James Gay-Rees producing and Chris King editing.
Maradona was a member of the Italian club Napoli and has often been considered the greatest soccer player of all time, one who even has a religion – Church of Maradona – created in his name. Yet he was also a controversial figure with scandals involving an illegitimate son, mafia ties and a cocaine habit – ultimately leading him to retire in disgrace in 1992.
Like Kapadia’s previous films, this will utilise hundreds of hours of never-before-seen footage taken from his personal archive.
