The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has selected the ten films to move forward in the visual effects category for the 90th Academy Awards. The ten nominees, which will be whittled down to five for the final nominations, are:
“Alien: Covenant,” “Blade Runner 2049,” “Dunkirk,” “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” “Kong: Skull Island,” “Okja,” “The Shape of Water,” “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets,” “War for the Planet of the Apes”
Films that dropped out in this round include the likes of “Ghost in the Shell,” “Logan,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” “Spider-Man Homecoming,” “Thor: Ragnarok” and “Wonder Woman”
All members of the Visual Effects Branch will now be invited to view 10-minute excerpts from each of the shortlisted films on January 6th. Following the screenings, the members will vote to nominate five films for final Oscar consideration with those announced January 23rd. The winner will be revealed during the Oscars on March 4th.
Previous winners in year’s past include “The Jungle Book,” “Ex Machina,” “Interstellar,” “Gravity” and “Life of Pi”.
