Starz is forging ahead with its TV series adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s “American Gods” despite the exit of showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green late last year.
With the pair’s departure, some of the cast has also bailed (or considering bailing) on the show – most notably Gillian Anderson who won’t be reprising her role as shape-shifting deity ‘Media’.
Now, TV Line reports that the character is not being recast, instead it is being replaced with a slightly different version who will return in the form of an Asian woman in her twenties called, yep, ‘New Media’.
Whereas Anderson’s ‘Media’ was powered by films and TV, New Media receives her power by engagement on social media networks like Twitter and Facebook. The role has yet to be cast.
Jesse Alexander will serve as showrunner of the new season alongside Gaiman himself. Production on the new episodes aims to begin in May.
