Following the show’s world premiere at SXSW over the weekend, Starz has released a brand-new trailer for the highly anticipated original series “American Gods” based on the novel by Neil Gaiman.
The story posits a different kind of war brewing – one between traditional Old Gods with mythological roots from around the world and who fear irrelevance as their believers die off, vs. the New Gods of money, technology, and celebrity.
Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle) is an ex-con who, left adrift by the recent death of his wife, becomes bodyguard and traveling partner to conman Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane) – unaware the latter is one of the Old Gods on a cross-country mission to build an army and reclaim his lost glory.
In an interview with Variety this week, co-showrunner Bryan Fuller confirmed he has expanded the female roles and that racial issues are a part of the series.
Talking about the casting diversity, he says: “One of the things that was exciting for us in casting the show … is that so much of the book is based on other cultures and other ethnicities, so it gave us the opportunity not to be color blind. It was great working with Neil because he was very, very adamant that every actor we cast must be very representative of the book … and gave us the opportunity for much more inclusive casting to represent America.”
The series premieres on Sunday, April 30th.
