“American Gangster” Gets A Prequel TV Series

“Narcos” co-creator Chris Brancato is reportedly developing a TV series prequel to Ridley Scott’s 2007 film “American Gangster” which starred Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe.

Set in Harlem in the early 1960s, five years before the events of the film, the action follows mob boss Bumpy Johnson with Forest Whitaker attached to star in the role.

Clarence Williams III very briefly played the role in the film which began with Johnson dying of a heart attack and his right hand man Frank Lucas (Washington) taking control of the Harlem crime scene.

Johnson was very close friends with Malcom X, with the series aiming to explore the collision of the criminal underworld and the civil rights movement.

Additionally, rapper Kendrick Lamar is tipped to provide music for the series. The untitled show is still being developed, with a streaming service to be its likely home.
