Lionsgate has locked down a September 15th release for “American Assassin,” the upcoming potential franchise launching film adaptation of Vince Flynn’s novels about counterterrorism operative Mitch Rapp.
“Teen Wolf” and “The Maze Runner” star Dylan O’Brien plays the CIA black ops recruit who is under the instruction of Cold War veteran Stan Hurley (Michael Keaton). The pair are enlisted by CIA Deputy Director Irene Kennedy (Sanaa Lathan) to investigate a wave of apparently random attacks on both military and civilian targets.
Together the three discover a pattern in the violence leading them to a joint mission with a lethal Turkish agent (Shiva Negar) to stop a mysterious operative (Taylor Kitsch) intent on starting a World War in the Middle East.
Michael Cuesta (“Kill The Messenger”) helms from a screenplay by Stephen Schiff (“The Americans”). Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Nick Wechsler are producing.
In related news, Universal Pictures and Good Universe have today announced a release date of January 26th 2018 for the sci-fi thriller “Extinction”.
Michael Pena and Lizzy Caplan topline the film about a man who must save his family from an otherworldly phenomenon. Ben Young helms from a script by Eric Heisserer alongside Spenser Cohen and Bradley Caleb Kane.
