AMC’s “Bad,” “Dead” Dominate Twitter Ratings

Whilst regular TV ratings remain the be all and end all, social media reaction is becoming a legitimate measure of the success of certain TV shows. With the regular TV season just wrapped, Nielsen has released its Twitter TV Ratings, revealing the most tweeted about shows online over the season (starting September 1st 2013 and ending May 25th 2014).

According to Deadline, Nielsen specifically measures only “the audience of unduplicated Twitter users who see a post by another Twitter user about a show during its initial broadcast and for the three hours before and after that broadcast.” Basically social media reaction has to occur within hours of the broadcast or it doesn’t count.

Unsurprising, AMC’s “Breaking Bad” and “The Walking Dead” came out on top. With ‘Bad’ approximately 6,026,000 Twitter accounts viewed at least one of the 521,000 average tweets sent regarding an episode of the series. ‘Dead’ was second with a per episode average of 5,168,000 accounts viewing 576,000 tweets.

Where it gets colorful is a bit further down. In third place is ABC Family’s “Pretty Little Liars” (4,778,000 audience/675,000 tweets), followed by ABC’s “The Bachelor” (3,620,000 audience/196,000 tweets), whilst HBO’s “Game of Thrones” (3,507,000 audience/153,000 tweets) rounds out the Top 5.

MTV’s “Teen Wolf,” FX’s “American Horror Story: Cover,” ABC’s “Scandal,” NBC’s “The Voice” and ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” make up the rest of the top ten.
