The BBC may have cancelled it, but Amazon has granted Victorian-era detective drama “Ripper Street” a stay of execution.
The online retail giant has ordered an eight-episode third season of the series as part of the launch of its Amazon Prime Streaming Video service in the United Kingdom.
The new series will stream on Amazon UK before the it screens on BBC One which aired the first two seasons.
BBC America will remain onboard as a co-producer and U.S. broadcaster. Currently, Amazon does not have streaming rights for the show in the United States.
This marks the first time Amazon has resurrected a previously canceled series, something rival Netflix has become known for with shows like “Arrested Development” and “The Killing”.
The new season will begin filming in May ahead of a 2015 premiere.
