Amazon Studios has given an eight-episode straight-to-series order to fantasy drama “Carnival Row” from “Star Trek” legend Rene Echevarria, “Pacific Rim” scribe Travis Beacham, and “Victor Frankenstein” helmer Paul McGuigan.
The urban fantasy noir is set in a neo-Victorian city where mythical creatures fleeing their war-torn homeland have gathered in the city, and tensions are simmering between citizens and the growing immigrant population.
The series follows the investigation of a string of unsolved murders that are eating away at whatever uneasy peace still exists. The project is a TV adaptation of Beacham’s “A Killing on Carnival Row” screenplay which has floated around Hollywood for over a decade.
A year ago, Amazon ordered a pilot but have now opted for a straight-to-series order. Echevarria is the writer, executive producer and showrunner, while McGuigan is set to direct and executive produce, and Beacham will serve as executive producer.
The series is scheduled to begin filming next Fall for a 2019 premiere.
