Amazon has made an official announcement regarding Amazon Original Movies, a new film distribution venture which is about to enter the field of theatrical exhibition.
Amazon Prime will annually acquire and produce twelve movies to be released in cinemas under the Amazon Original Movies label before appearing online through the Amazon Prime Instant Video streaming service approximately four to eight weeks later.
Roy Price, vice-president of Amazon Studios, says: “Not only will we bring Prime Instant Video customers exciting, unique, and exclusive films soon after a movie’s theatrical run, but we hope this program will also benefit filmmakers, who too often struggle to mount fresh and daring stories that deserve an audience.”
The venture will kick off later this year, but there are no details as yet regarding what will be the first production or purchase under the new studio’s banner.
The move is seen as a reaction to Netflix’s move into theatrical distribution with the upcoming “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” sequel, although that streaming giant hasn’t announced plans for a concrete and consistent schedule of theatrical releases like this.
