Amazon Studios has hopped onboard Sony Pictures Television’s upcoming series adaptation of Robert Jordan’s high fantasy novels “The Wheel of Time”.
There are fourteen novels in total, beginning with ‘The Eye of the Universe’ in 1990 and concluding with ‘A Memory of Light’ in 2007, and the books have sold more than 90 million copies worldwide. The story is set in an epic world where magic exists but only women can use it.
The story follows Moiraine, a member of a shadowy and influential all-female organization, and five young men and women as they journey across the world on a quest to find the Dragon Reborn who it is said will help unite forces to combat The Dark One.
Rafe Judkins (“Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”) adapted the material into a series and serves as showrunner with Amazon’s Jennifer Salke confirming this week that the series will premiere globally on Amazon Prime Video.
An adaptation of “The Wheel of Time” novels has been in development in one form or another going back as far as 2000, but the projects mostly never made it past that stage due to legal issues which were finally sorted out in 2016.
