Amazing Spider-Man Tops Box-Office

Sony’s high-profile reboot “The Amazing Spider-Man” pulled in an additional $65 million from Friday through Sunday at the U.S. box-office. Combined with its mid-week launch figures, the Andrew Garfield-led superhero relaunch matched early estimates of a $140 million six day total.

That $65M makes it the fourth biggest Independence Day Holiday weekend earner, behind the first and third “Transformers” film and the second Sam Raimi “Spider-Man” movie.

It’s also the third best opening weekend number for the Summer season behind only “The Avengers” and “Brave”, while IMAX screens accounted for around $14.3 million, or 10% of the domestic total.

The $140M first six day haul is on par with Raimi’s first “Spider-Man” film in 2002 which took $144M over the same period. The subsequent sequels performed much higher ($180M & $176M respectively).

Launched internationally this week in most countries, the film has also already racked up an impressive $201.6 million outside the United States.
