Forget that Julia Roberts as Julia Roberts in “Ocean’s Twelve” stunt, this sort of tops that in the self-aware stakes.
As previously reported, Oscar-winning filmmaker Steven Soderbergh is set to direct “Magic Mike”, a true story feature that revolves around the time in the very late 90’s when then unknown “Dear John” and “Step Up” actor Channing Tatum worked as a male stripper at the age of 19.
Reid Carolin is penning the script which chronicles a mentor-protege relationship in which the title character teaches a young dancer in how to hustle on and off the stage.
Now, Deadline reports that “I Am Number Four” and “Beastly” star Alex Pettyfer is set to slip on the thong and grind away at the screen in the role of the young dancer, while Tatum himself will play the titular Mike.
It’s not sure if Pettyfer’s character would also be called Channing Tatum, but one wouldn’t put it past Soderbergh to follow through on such a crazy idea. The tone and mold of the film is said to be akin to “Saturday Night Fever”. Tatum, Nick Wechsler, Gregory Jacobs and Reid Carolin are producing.
For an example of what Pettyfer is likely to do, check out this clip of a performance by Tatum back in those days that was splashed all over the news outlets in late 2009.
