Alec Baldwin has been cast as Col. Nathan Jessup in NBC’s upcoming live reading of Aaron Sorkin’s “A Few Good Men”.
Sorkin will write the teleplay adaptation which he penned at age 26 as a stage production that premiered on Broadway in 1989. Three years later he adapted the play as a feature that went on to receive an Oscar nomination for Best Picture. Jack Nicholson played Jessup in the film.
The courtroom drama follows a young military lawyer Lt. Daniel Kaffee, who comes up against the formidable Col. Jessup when he is asked to defend Marines stationed at Guantanamo Bay who are on trial for murder.
Whilst live musicals have been all the rage for the past few years, this marks a network’s first live production of a Broadway drama in more than fifty years.
Sorkin will executive produce and adapt his own play for the broadcast, while Craig Zadan and Neil Meron (“Hairspray Live!”) will also executive produce. “A Few Good Men” will air in the second quarter of 2018.
