This coming Friday is the fifth season finale of ABC’s “Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD,” and potentially the final season of the MCU spin-off series.
With the network upfront presentations this coming week, it was thought a decision as to whether the show would return or not would’ve been made by this point. The past 48 hours or so has seen an absolute bloodbath with around two dozen series given the axe.
Of those, “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” managed to stave off death while the fanbases of “Lucifer” and “The Expanse” have been the most vocal online asking for their shows to have another chance.
However the fate of “SHIELD”? Not a sound from ABC or Marvel, though a THR correspondent has provided an update saying: “#AgentsOfSHIELD is still in contention. Decision expected in the coming days.” That means the earliest we’ll know is during ABC’s upfront presentation itself which takes place Tuesday afternoon.
Airing May 18th and titled “The End,” the season finale’s synopsis reads: “Coulson’s life or death is the challenge the team finds themselves in, as the wrong decision will cause the destruction of Earth.”
Fans have been campaigning hard for its renewal on Twitter and Facebook, but complicating matters is the fact the series has name-dropped Thanos and the events of “Avengers: Infinity War” in the most recent two episodes and so any further episodes would have to deal with the events portrayed in that film.
Either way, Clark Gregg’s Phil Coulson will still be around, the character set to pop up in next year’s “Captain Marvel” film.
