AFI Announces 2014 Top 10 Films & Shows

The American Film Institute have announced their yearly picks with eleven films, rather than the usual ten, making the cut this year of works they deem “culturally and artistically representative of the year’s most significant achievements in the art of the moving image”.

Their top ten films (in alphabetical order): “American Sniper,” “Birdman,” “Boyhood,” “Foxcatcher,” “The Imitation Game,” “Interstellar,” “Into the Woods,” “Nightcrawler,” “Selma,” “Unbroken” and “Whiplash”.

Seven of last year’s ten AFI films scored Best Picture Oscar noms so expect many of the titles mentioned there to pop up. High profile omissions from the list this year include “Gone Girl,” “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” “Still Alice” and “A Most Violent Year”.

They’ve also revealed their picks for the best TV of the year with six of the ten being new series. On the TV front, their picks are (in alphabetical order): “The Americans,” “Fargo,” “Game of Thrones,” “How to Get Away With Murder,” “Jane the Virgin,” “The Knick,” “Mad Men,” “Orange is the New Black,” “Silicon Valley” and “Transparent.”
