Ben Affleck has dropped out of contention to play Tom Buchanan in Baz Luhrmann’s 3D adaptation of “The Great Gatsby” at Warner Bros. Pictures reports Deadline.
Affleck was offered the role in early April and Baz “courted him hard”. However scheduling just didn’t work out due to Affleck’s commitment to direct the 1979 Iran hostage crisis drama “Argo” which is shooting in the Middle East. ‘Gatsby” will film in Australia.
Luhrmann currently has commitments from Leonardo DiCaprio to play Jay Gatsby, Carey Mulligan to play Daisy Buchanan, and Tobey Maguire to play Nick Carraway while Isla Fisher is in talks to play Myrtle.
Luhrmann is expected to fill the rest of the cast, and likely the Buchanan role now, with Australian actors to help the film’s financial situation.
