Activision has issued a press release that their “Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare” was the top-selling console video game of 2014, and their “Skylanders Trap Team” was the top-selling kids video game in the world.
Activision and Bungie’ “Destiny” came in second within the United States based on revenue. It is also the top-selling new video game IP of the year and had the biggest launch of a new video game franchise in history. Of course, Activision did not release specific sales statistics (i.e. actual revenue or numbers of copies sold) in the press release, a figure many want to know.
Results released by the NPD Group this week indicate the video game industry ended last year up 1% with $13.1 billion in sales. Hardware sales were up 20% to $5 billion, which compensated for the 13% drop in games sales which were $5.3 billion. Tie-in toys and portable devices grew 5% to $2.7 billion.
