Disney’s upcoming animated feature “Moana” will be going by a different title in Italy, “Oceana,” though the reason is a bit different than you might expect.
When films change their titles overseas it’s often due to legal reasons be it copyright or censorship, while sometimes it’s for marketing reasons. In the case of “Moana” though its due to the name’s similarity to a legendary Italian adult film star according to Cartoon Brew.
Moana Pozzi passed away at the age of 33 in 1994 but, over two decades on, is still famous in the country – beyond her naughty film work she also ran for Mayor of Rome at one point and started her own political party.
The Disney marketing team in Italy reportedly felt compelled to change the name of the film to “Oceana,” but the site does indicate that Disney’s Italian reps have yet to offer an official explanation – the porn star theory is what’s currently going around. Update: One poster says the directors of the film have pretty much confirmed the theory.
The film itself follows an adventurous teenager who sails out on a daring mission to save her people. During her journey, Moana (Auli’i Cravalho) meets the mighty demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson), who guides her in her quest to become a master wayfinder.
