Once one of the most popular cast members on the series, comedian Adam Sandler has never returned to “Saturday Night Live” since he left his five-year regular stint on the series in 1995.
That finally changes this year with the actor set to host the show on May 4th alongside musical guest Shawn Mendes. Executive producer Lorne Michaels says in a statement: “We are happy to welcome Adam back to SNL in what is sure to be a special night.”
Sandler left SNL and made the jump to film with some initially successful but increasingly bad comedy films along with the occasional well-regarded drama stint such as “Punch Drunk Love”.
Sandler’s next film is Netflix’s “Murder Mystery” co-starring Jennifer Aniston, Luke Evans and Gemma Arterton.
